Master of Design
An architect by training, I launched FORTarchitect and built it into a diverse and successful architectural practice known for award-winning, leading edge sustainable housing. My impressive client list included the University of Toronto, the Schulich School of Business, the Toronto Region Conservation Authority, Gucci and Club Monaco.
Looking for new challenges, I stepped aside from private practice to immerse myself in digital technology studies at OCAD. The University’s Master of Design in Digital Futures combines transliteracy across art, design, technology and innovation with in-depth individualized thesis research: in my case, field research into India’s mobile phone economy that culminated in my thesis entitled New Uses for Old Phones: Upcycling the Rotary Dial Phone in the Age of the Smartphone. It addressed the problem of increasingly rapid mobile phone obsolescence with two interactive projects that proposed ways to upcycle the rotary dial phone by making it function just like a smartphone.
The result? A master of design: a multi-disciplinary designer inspired by real world issues, solidly grounded in bricks and mortar making and equally fluent in the latest digital technology and design thinking.
